Bumper entry expected for Partington Plate

2008-10-16 00:00

HMYC are looking forward to a bumper entry for their Partington Plate Series race being held at Midmar on Saturday afternoon.

Vice commodore Tim Duguid has appealed to all Hunter sailors to support the race to get in practice for the forthcoming Hunter Provincials. A semi-long-distance course will be used, which is always interesting and challenging.

Some competitive racing is presently taking place with top honours being shared between Craig Millar and Tony Cockerill, with dark horses Paul Changuion and Rob Samways always challenging. The coming provincial promises to be a humdinger.

Saturday’s race will be directed by Roy Shooter. The following weekend sees HMYC holding their Rose Bowl Regatta, which is open to all classes on handicap. The Saturday race will be timed to finish before the Currie Cup rugby final, which will be screened in the HMYC Club house.

Youth sailors will also be in action that weekend in the KwaZulu-Natal Optimist Association’s Grand Prix Series at HMYC at Midmar.

Thursday evening sees Maritzburg Radio Yacht Club sailors’ first race “after 5pm” at HMYC, followed by a braai. A MRYC R36 Shipmate class league race is scheduled for 2.30 pm on Saturday afternoon.

Five KZN Radio sailors travelled to Cape Town last weekend for the International 1 m Class Table Mountain Regatta. Very competitive racing was seen with MRYC Commodore Desmond Fairbank in invincible form. He comfortably won the Regatta finishing on 46 points, way ahead of Cape Town sailor Barry Loubser (108 points).

Fairbank has proved over the years to be an outstanding Radio sailor, having won every national class on many occasions and a major international in the R/C Laser class.
