Burglars enter clothing store through roof

2014-05-21 00:00

CRIMINALS staged a daring break-in at the Hub clothing store in the early hours of Monday morning, allegedly using scaffolding planks from a neighbouring building to gain access to the store.

The store declined to speak to The Witness about the break-in yesterday.

The Witness understands that the criminals gained access to the store through the roof and that there was much damage to the store.

The burglars are believed to have removed one of the tiles and broken through the ceiling to gain access to the shop floor.

But they had to abandon their plan when the store alarm went off, and left the goods they were preparing to steal, which were recovered already packed in suitcases ready to carry away. The police described the value of the stolen items as low but said the store would still need to do a full stocktaking audit to determine how much was lost or stolen.

A case of business burglary is being investigated by the Pietermaritzburg SAPS.

They said that at around 3 am on Monday, the management of the store was summoned to the premises in Church Street by their security company.

Police said the Hub staff discovered that there had been a break-in and that criminals had entered the store through the roof.

Clothing and cosmetics that were to have been stolen were found at the scene.

The police said no arrests have been made yet.
