Burglars prey on complex

2008-07-28 00:00

Residents of the Terrace (not Terrance as previously reported) simplexes in Pietermaritzburg are fed up with break-ins happening in broad daylight.

One of the victims, Sakhizwe Baai (32), whose house was broken into for the third time in three months on Thursday, has moved out of the property in Steven Road, Lincoln Meade, after living there for eight months.

He was first burgled in May. The criminals struck again in June, but that time they failed as he had just installed an alarm system.

But last week burglars entered the complex by climbing over a concrete fence and were able to get past the alarm system on his property.

They removed one of his windows and grabbed a basket full of laundry containing almost all Baai’s clothes.

At the same time the neighbouring Dlamini family lost a television set to the thieves.

Said Baai, who is an information technology technician at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife: “During the first incident, I lost more than 10 pairs of shoes, all my clothes and those of my fiancée. They also stole all my electronic appliances. In total I have lost close to R40 000 worth of my belongings.”

Baai’s simplex is near the concrete fence separating the complex from a farm.

Baai is among a number of residents, especially those who live at the edge of the complex near the fence, who are targeted. The residents said they have raised the issue of security with the body corporate.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said both the cases that Baai reported are still under investigation, but that no arrests have been made.
