A POTENTIALLY fatal accident in Pietermaritzburg was quickly brought under control yesterday morning without any injuries.

A heavy-duty truck carrying coal caught fire as it was driving past the Liberty Midlands Mall at around 6.30 am.

The fire was believed to have been caused by its tyres which had overheated, said an official with the fire department. The coal did not catch fire.

“There were no injuries in the incident. We got the call around 6.35 am, and we arrived there at 6.40 am. Our firefighters were there for about two hours,” he said.

There were minor traffic disruptions during the incident.
