Burry Stander kingof the road again

2011-01-29 00:00

MOUNTAIN bikers dominated the show at the KZN Road and Time Trial Cycling Championships last weekend.

Multiple mountain bike world championship medallist Burry Stander (Specialized USN) gave another display of his diversity when he won both the time trial and road championships.

Stander, who lives near Port Shepstone, captured the gold medal in the individual time trial on Saturday in an impressive 52:29 over the undulating 40,5km course near Camperdown.

He followed that up on Sunday with victory in the 120 km road race, ridden mostly in heavy rain. His time of 3:04:34 was more than three minutes quicker than the next rider across the line.

“I was under a lot of pressure during the early part of the race, having to cover most of the breaks; not much assistance from other riders. Then I decided at about 70 km to thin the field out a bit and did a hard pull on the front for a while which got the group down to seven,” Stander explained.

The lead group was then whittled down to four by the start of the 10 km finishing circuit for the final 40 km and comprised Stander, fellow mountain bikers Brandon Stewart (DCM) and Luke Roberts (BMC) with Richard Baxter (Tasol/GT). Roberts, Baxter and Stewart finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Cherise Taylor (Team USN) showed good form ahead of the upcoming 2011 national championships when she too took double honours in both the time trial and road championships.

The reigning SA road champ clocked 45:17 to win the 31km individual time trial with an average speed of 41,3 km/h. On Sunday she won the 90 km road race title, breaking clear of the field on the early climbs and winning time in 2:37:12. “Winning both races is good for my motivation and confidence with just over two weeks until SA champs,” said Taylor. She led a Team USN podium clean sweep in both events, with Karien van Jaarsveld and Danni Dalton claiming the silver and bronze medals respectively in the Elite category.

The 2011 South African Road Championships are in Port Elizabeth from 2-6 February.

MULTISPORT

The fourth edition of the Spec-Savers Ironman 70,3 South Africa in East London last weekend produced two new champions — Belgian Frederik van Lierde (4:06:30) and Britian’s Jodie Swallow (4:39:19) — under trying conditions.

In a strongly contested international field, South African James Cunnama showed superb form to take second place (4:08:41) ahead of Italian Aleesandro Degasperi (4:15:16). The women’s race saw Belgian Tine Deckers place second (4:42:25) with South Africa’s defending champion Mari Rabi placing third (4:45:45).

Several KZN triathletes performed well in their age groups. Andre Booyens placed third in the highly competitive men’s 30-34 age group, in a time of 4:45:11.

Talented endurance couple Lance and Sue Chapman both placed an impressive fourth in their age groups, Lance clocking 4:48:31 in the 35-39 age-group and Sue (35-39) finishing in 5:36:32 in her first attempt at Ironman 70,3. Durban’s Wilma van Niekerk placed fifth in the women’s 40-44 age group.
