Bursaries for teachers: 58 left

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has filled most of the 1 118 vacant posts that were advertised this year.

Only 133 posts are waiting to be filled in the Umkhanyakude District.

In a statement yesterday, department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the department had “surpassed all expectations”.

He said that this year the department made available 200 bursaries for students who wanted to pursue studies in education and were specialising in mathematics, science, commerce and information technology. Five-eight bursaries remained.

Mlotshwa said the department appointed more than 700 teachers before the schools reopened in January.

He said all of the 894 promotional posts that were advertised towards the end of last year were filled.

However, there were 82 posts that remained vacant due to disputes, and school governing bodies had not completed the appointments.

“In August last year, the department advertised 225 posts for principals, 300 posts for deputy principals and the rest were for the heads of departments,” Mlotshwa said.

Of all the teachers employed this year, 627 were Fundza Lushaka Bursary holders and 63 were recipients of the department’s bursary scheme.

Applicants for the 58 bursaries should contact the department, Mlotshwa said.

The applicants must be already registered or studying towards an education qualification or studying mathematics, science, commerce or information technology.
