Bus crash: Baby may have been orphaned in Hex river accident

2013-03-18 00:00

CAPE TOWN — A three-month-old baby may have been orphaned by the bus crash in the Hex River Valley on Friday.

Pumzile Papu, spokesperson for the Western Cape Health Department, said yesterday that the baby’s father was one of two men killed in the crash.

“After I spoke to some of the survivors, it seems the baby’s mother was also killed.”

Altogether, 24 people died in the crash, including the bus driver and two children.

Papu doesn’t know whether the baby is a boy or a girl, but said the infant was in a stable condition in the Red Cross children’s hospital.

He said they would only be able to confirm whether both parents died after the formal identification of bodies.

Members of the Twelve Apostles’ Church in Christ were returning from a gathering in Mpumalanga when the bus careered off the road, landing upside down in a ditch.
