Bus crashes into house, two flee

FIVE family members narrowly escaped injury after a bus ploughed into their house in the Draaihoek area of Edendale on Sunday night.

It is alleged that the bus had two occupants at the time of the crash, but they fled the scene.

The bus rolled back about 100 m before smashing into the house.

Thandeka Memela told The Witness her family were chatting when they heard a loud noise,

“I thought that it was just a truck passing by over the speed humps, but my brother Bheki walked to the window and opened the curtain.

“He shouted: ‘Run away, mother’ and the next thing the bus crashed into the house,” said Memela.

In the confusion, she had to search for her mother, Octavia, and son, Lusanda.

“The room was covered in dust and the bus lit up the room with its back light,” said Memela.

Bheki Memela said it was too late for them to do anything.

“By the time I opened the curtain, the bus was just about three metres away from the house. I saw the back light of the bus and it crashed into the wall.”

Octavia Memela (71), a pensioner and the owner of the house, was still in shock yesterday morning.

“It was a miracle that no one was harmed. God saved us all.”

Kalamazoo bus company manager Bhekani Maphumulo said they were still investigating and communicating with the Memela family.

“We tested the bus at the accident scene and it was not faulty. I even drove it to the bus depot. We are still looking for our driver as we can’t get him on his cellphone.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said police were investigating and a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened. “It is alleged that the bus driver was driving along Edendale Road when he lost control of the vehicle,” said Jeevan.
