Business express train to Durban

2010-06-08 00:00

A BUSINESS express train is expected to run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg from October.

This was announced yesterday by Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) CEO Lucky Montana at the opening of the R151 million Moses Mabhida train station by Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele.

Ndebele disclosed at the opening that workers who were involved in building the stadiums and other 2010 projects will be absorbed into a R700 billion, three-year project to build roads, bridges and dams.

He said the project will include the construction of a high-speed rail line between Johannesburg and Durban and that specialists from China and Germany will be hired to help implement it.

Prasa spokesperson Thandi Mkhize confirmed there will be a new business express train, adding that it will ease congestion on the roads.

The train will cater mostly for businesspeople and government employees commuting between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

It will have a different look and feel from ordinary trains, she said.

The train will run between Durban station and Pietermaritzburg, stopping only at Rossburgh station.

“The refurbishment of the two stations has been part of the 2010 building project.”

The trains will have comfortable interiors and facilities for laptop users to cater for businesspeople, Mkhize added.

They will run only in the morning and evening, providing a comfortable 90-minute ride.

The National Union of Mineworkers, which represents construction workers, has expressed concern about the future of the people who built the stadiums.
