Business steps up to clean city’s filth

2010-03-08 00:00

FED-UP with seeing piles of black bags on Pietermaritzburg’s streets, employees of a community-spirited business in the city will be out collecting rubbish from 8 am today.

Organised by Hirsch’s as a way to give something back to the community, 40 of the company’s employees will be removing rubbish on Roberts Road before moving on to Victoria Road, Church Street and other roads in the CBD.

The employees will be working in two teams of 20.

Charlotte Janse van Rensburg, public relations officer for Hirsch’s in Chatterton Road, said the idea came about after she got “fed-up” with seeing all the black bags lying around the city as a result of the strike by Msunduzi municipal workers in the water, electricity, traffic and waste departments because of unpaid overtime pay and other issues.

“Being the PR for Hirsch’s, I felt we should do something. If each person just picks up one black bag it’s going to help,” Janse van Rensburg added.

Also doing their bit for the initiative are: ABI, which has sponsored cooldrinks for the workers; Pick n Pay in Victoria Road, which will be providing doughnuts; Protectowear, which is giving the volunteers special PVC gloves to wear; and DatCentre, which is providing four Nissan bakkies and drivers for the project.

“The businesses in town have really stepped up to the mark,” Janse van Rensburg said, “I’m very impressed with how they’ve responded.”
