Businessman linked to fenced gems

THE Durban police K9 unit (formerly the dog unit) has arrested a businessman for allegedly colluding with a criminal gang that “specialises” in house robberies in the Phoenix and greater Durban North areas.

The 51-year-old businessman, whose name is withheld, was found in possession of R20 000 cash and jewellery valued at R100 000.

Police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the police were tipped off about the man’s activities and on Tuesday the K9 unit descended on his jewellery shop in Bond Street.

“We understand that the man operates with a gang of house robbers who steal jewellery and sell it to him.

“He then re-works the jewellery and put it on his business shelves for resale,” said Mdunge.

“We suspect that the R20 000 he had with him was for buying more stolen jewellery from these criminals.”

The man will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.
