Bust: Police joint operation nets R12,5 mln worth of cannabis in outbound container

POLICE foiled drug dealers’ plans to export approximately 800 kg of compressed dagga and hashish, with a street value estimated at R12,5 million that was going to be transported by sea to one of the European states, in a successful operation that was carried out last week.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said it took teamwork for KZN police to dismantle a criminal network when information was received two months ago that a container with a huge consignment of compressed cannabis and hashish was being prepared to be despatched to one of the European states.

He said during a joint operation conducted between Thursday night and Friday morning, a container from Gauteng Province was intercepted with the content of approximately 800 kg compressed dagga and hashish worth about R12,5 million on the street.

“The teamwork of the Durban Organised Crime Unit, Crime Intelligence, Port Security Services (PSS), SA Revenue Services and Customs and Excise has severely broken down the criminal network and its syndicate of hardened criminals,” said Mdunge. The suspects hid the contraband in charcoal bags, which were hidden behind drums of fruit juice and car engine parts.

“A full scale container profiling was conducted and cannabis was found following an intelligence-driven operation that saw the sinking of an envisaged but never realised fortune,” added Mdunge.
