Busy time for KZN provincial teams

2013-10-10 00:00

KZN provincial cricket teams have much to look forward to in national competitions this weekend.

KZN Inland host North West from today to Sunday at the Maritzburg Oval. KZN Coastal travel to Windhoek to play Namibia over the same period and the KZN Women’s team treks to Bloemfontein and Kimberley to meet Free State and Griquas on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

At this early stage of the season, both KZN Coastal and KZN Inland are enjoying unprecedented success in the CSA Provincial Three-Day and One-Day competitions. They collectively have six wins from six outings, drawing much praise from Dolphins CEO Jesse Chellan.

The happy situation sees KZN Coastal on top of the three-day log with 37 points from two matches. Northerns, who the Durban lads conquered last week, are in second place, a sizeable 11 points behind. KZN Inland, after just one match, are in an impressive fifth place.

The one-day (50-over) log sees Coastal again on top with eight points from two outings while Inland lie second with five points from only one match.

Both North West and Namibia are in the bottom half of both tables. Both the Inland and Coastal sides show changes from last week’s successful teams, as the Dolphins are playing this weekend and have plucked some prize players out of both teams.

However, as both Inland and Coastal have learned to their cost over recent seasons, unless they have depth in their squads, the chances of title success are always going to be small.

To a greater or lesser extent, both unions appear to have learnt from their mistakes in that regard, but this weekend’s matches will certainly provide more of a test than the fun times both teams have enjoyed over the past fortnight.

Player/coach Dinesha Devnarain and the KZN Women’s team will also get an idea of where they stand at this early stage of their season once the outcomes of this weekend’s matches are decided.
