Busy week ahead for schools

2010-01-02 00:00

JUST a few days into the New Year and schools’ cricket at two separate festivals is about to begin in Pietermaritzburg.

The Maritzburg College January Festival begins on Monday and the long-standing Alexandra Festival, going into its 31st year, begins on Tuesday. Next week, the Independent Schools Festival takes place at Hilton.

College will be hosting an Australian school, Canberra Grammar, among the four visiting schools in the ninth year of this festival. The other schools, all from Gauteng, are St Johns, St Davids and Trinityhouse.

The KZN schools joining the hosts are Clifton, Glenwood and Westville. The festival ends on Wednesday.

Maritzburg College play Canberra tomorrow.

There are a number of players who represented their provinces at one of the national festivals held during early December. This will include SA Schools player Calvin Savage from the host school.

The Alex Festival has 10 schools participating over four days. There are three schools from beyond the KZN borders — Clapham College and The Glen HS, both in Pretoria, and Hudson Park 2nd XI in East London. The local schools are Alexandra, Carter, Voortrekker and an Invitation side, Cumberwood, from the Northern suburbs. From outside Maritzburg are Howick, Treverton and Wartburg.

The festivals, before the new term begins, are an ideal opportunity for coaches to finalise their teams for the first term, but it does put a strain on groundsmen at the various venues.

The College festival will use Goldstones and Barns fields at the school, and then Collegians and the Standard ground over the three days. Alex is fortunate to have three suitable grounds on their campus, and the other two fields to be used are at Voortrekker.

With the weather seemingly more settled than it was in the fourth quarter, where many games were lost, the cricketers will be hoping to get all matches played. Storms, the norm in summer, are likely to cause some disruption on some of the days.
