’Bye Polly

2008-02-06 00:00

SHAUN Pollock's retirement from international cricket brings to an end both a distinguished career and the feats of South Africa’s most famous cricketing family. In 13 years Pollock has taken 421 Test wickets, scored two centuries and 16 half-centuries, while in the one-day form of the game he has 393 wickets to his credit, as well as one century and 14 fifties.

As commendable as his achievements on the field has been his demeanour off it. He has often received poor treatment from the selectors. He was unjustly stripped of the captaincy, and recently, entirely unjustifiably, has been reduced to carrying the drinks as the 12th man in Test matches. Yet he has always behaved with grace and dignity. South African cricket will be the poorer without him.
