CCTV footage to ID brawlers at club

2009-12-12 00:00

CCTV footage of a brawl outside a Margate nightclub where two men were assaulted will be handed to police so that the culprits can be brought to book.

While the circumstances surrounding the brawl are still under police investigation, it is understood that an argument among patrons at Koko’s bar turned physical. The men left the club and continued the argument outside on the street.

It is further alleged that one of the men involved in the brawl left the scene and returned with a bakkie. He then attempted to run over another patron with the bakkie.

A group of patrons witnessed the incident and pulled the driver and his passenger from the bakkie. The group kicked and hit the two men.

The driver of the bakkie was critically injured as well as the man he had run over.

Victor Chetty of the Port Shepstone Protection Services met the club owners and police to discuss the incident and the bylaws that regulate clubs.

He said that police are still taking statements from the victims.

“One of the victims is still in a critical condition. Police will take a statement as soon as he is able to talk.”

Chetty said that CCTV footage will be handed to police to help in the investigation.

“While this is an isolated incident, we are very concerned and want to prevent similar incidents in the future …” he said.

uMzimkhulu police spokeswoman Captain Zandra Wiid said that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.

An assault charge will be opened as soon as statements were handed in, she added.
