CD Review: Dance Music with Hip-Hop Edge

2008-06-20 00:00

WHEN I first popped this album into my CD player I was a tad disappointed but having listened to it a few times since then, it’s grown on me.

Hard Candy is Madonna’s 11th studio album for Warner Brothers Records and picks up where Confessions on a Dance Floor left off — albeit with a bit of hip-hop edge.

And that might just be my problem with it. I’m not a huge hip-hop fan.

That said, I quite liked Beat Goes On, which sees Madonna channelling a seventies disco queen with a little help from Kanye West.

Other highlights for me were Give it to me which is a great dance track, and Miles Away which is reminiscent of the singer’s earlier work.

One song that didn’t appeal to me at all was Spanish Lesson. It’s awful and had me hitting the skip button on the CD.

I don’t believe Hard Candy is Madonna’s best album, but it shows her continued growth as an artist and is definitely worth a listen.
