CD Review: Shannon Hope is touring hard to ‘fight a new day’ in the music industry

SHANNON Hope’s second album. Fight A New Day is a good indicator of an artist who obviously works hard at her craft. The folk-like alto quality in her vocals, and the space allowed in the musical arrangement evoke a number of sounds of yesteryear, while at the same time moving her past the sound of her debut STILL. This is an album which plays to Hope’s strength as an honest observer of the world around her.

The opening Fight A New Day is a retrospective look at her journey, led by the piano, which is followed by the poetic The Waiting Room — full of many anecdotal references to her solo-music adventures on the road.

Believe is an ode to optimism, dreamers and chance-takers, and there’s a likeable Cher-type quality to Hope’s vocals on this standout track.

The folky groove of The Liar belies the harsh sobreity of the lyrics, while Why I Bother, Being Brave and Love Knot are up-tempo observations of human behaviour and relationships.

The Happy Song has a quirky, theatrical quality about it, juxtaposed with the mellow sobriety of I Want You and Not Alone.

On Second Thought wraps up the album with a duo with Candice McMillan, who performs some excellent guitar work throughout the album to accompany Hope’s melodic runs on the piano.

Producer Tim Rankin, who also plays drums on the album, has crafted a great album, one which sees Hope characteristically touring hard to fight a new day in the music industry. This is an artist worth supporting and listening to.
