CD review: Up-beat vibe on locally produced alb um

2008-07-11 00:00

Blue Statue is, essentially, a solo project driven by Dion Williams, whose self-produced album World Gone Solo arrived at the office this week. Williams notes The Cure and The Rolling Stones are some of his influences, which is immediately apparent in his vocal style.

The album is a blend of techno-pop percussion and drum tracks layered with acoustic guitar, combined with Williams’ accentuated vocals. The 13 tracks include the more techno-pop driven tracks Motional Wreck, Face It and Screaming Son, to the reggae-infused Rasta Chant and She’s Got Me.

It’s often difficult to hear the lyrics — which makes it difficult to derive meaning out of the songs. But the upbeat vibe is reminiscent of live performances by Blue Statue — which hopefully will be coming soon.
