CFAD awards in Durban

2010-08-26 00:00

THE 10th annual Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD) graduation dinner takes place at the DLI Hall in Durban at 6 pm tomorrow.

A highlight of the evening will be the tertiary institution’s acknowledgment of unsung heroes who were instrumental in weaving the complex fabric of our community.

“The TLTL (Too Little Too Late) awards are given to people who contribute unselfishly to the community without the recognition they deserve. Most South African artists have highlighted the plight of the struggle for freedom and through their work people were able to break the silence,” said CFAD founder Nanda Soobben.

This year’s awardees are authors Aziz Hassim (The Lotus People), Prithiraj Dullay (Salt Water Runs in My Veins) and Ashwin Desai (Inside Indian Indenture: A South African Story). These people have all contributed meaningfully to the process of reconciliation, cultural awareness and nation-building through their writing.

This year’s Edge award for art and media achievement goes to Jan Jordaan, who initiated the UDHR International Print Portfolio for Artists for Human Rights in Durban. He has held many exhibitions, both national and international, he lectures printmaking at the Durban University of Technology and he functions as the director of Art for Humanity.

Those attending the ceremony can also enjoy fashion that was created by undergraduate design students who address the challenges of waste with a focus on recycling.
