CHARITY: ‘Iron Mike’ and Winnie at dinner

2008-01-31 00:00

Former boxer Mike Tyson with his ‘favourite South African’, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, at the boxing legend’s charity dinner at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park last night.

Women’s rights organisations were refused permission to picket outside and urged people to boycott the event. New ANC president Jacob Zuma pulled out just hours before the dinner, citing urgent ANC business.

The women’s groups were upset that Tyson, who served a sentence for rape in the 1990s, and Zuma, who was acquitted of rape in 2006, were going to share a platform. Tyson will visit children in Soweto today.
