CSA pulls plug on Kleinveldt contract

2014-04-16 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Cricket South Africa (CSA) pulled Rory Kleinveldt out of his contract with English county, Northamptonshire, shortly after he was unveiled as their overseas player.

The county released the following statement via their official website a few days ago, “Northants cricket can confirm that South African overseas bowler Rory Kleinveldt was withdrawn from his contract by Cricket South Africa after a knee injury had been diagnosed by their medical team.

“Rory was due to arrive in the UK today and the late decision by Cricket South Africa is extremely disappointing. Northants will continue in their search to bring an overseas player to the club for the 2014 cricket season.”

Northamptonshire acquired Kleinveldt’s services as a replacement for Australian Jackson Bird, who was due to play for them this season but had to pull out because of a back problem.

Kleinveldt has not played international cricket since July last year, on South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, but had been part of national squads since then.

He has also turned out regularly for the Cape Cobras, but injured his knee in their penultimate four-day game of the season against the Warriors.

He missed their final game against the Lions where they wrapped up the Sunfoil Series crown for the second successive year.
