Calendar: man must apologise

2007-12-19 00:00

LONG-serving Msunduzi Municipality employee Joe Moodley (56) will not be fired for ordering 50 calendars depicting a semi-nude woman appearing on what was purported to be the municipality’s official 2008 calendar.

It was resolved at Moodley’s final disciplinary hearing yesterday that he publicly apologise to the mayor, council and all citizens of the municipality for bringing council into disrepute, and undergo two months of psychological treatment for his actions.

An amount of R1 007,19 will be deducted from Moodley’s salary in January to pay for the calendars he ordered using council money.

Moodley has served the municipality as a storeman for the past 25 years and colleagues were surprised by his act.

His apology reads: “I apologise unreservedly to the mayor, citizens of the Msunduzi Municipality and anyone else that I may have embarrassed through my actions”.

Moodley’s representative at the hearing, Abdul Rehman, said he was able to save Moodley from being fired with a minimal sentence of a final written warning as it is still unclear whether Moodley was the only employee involved.
