Calitz: Drug case off the roll, for now

2013-02-23 00:00

FORMER Somali pirate hostage Debbie Calitz (50) yesterday said she was “very relieved” after a charge of being in possession of narcotics was yesterday provisionally withdrawn against her and eight co-accused at the Hatfield community court.

“I am very glad and relieved and now hope to get on with my life at last,” Calitz said when the state withdrew its case because a laboratory report on the investigation was still not submitted.

Calitz and eight other young people, including her daughter, Kerri-Ann Cross (21), and son, Jason Cross (23), were taken into custody in December last year at Kerri-Ann’s house in Constantiapark, Pretoria, when police raided the house.

They had acted on a tip-off that a “drug party” was being held at the house and confiscated a dagga plant, bags of dagga and magic mushrooms.

Peter Jay, attorney for most of the nine accused, said there is a slim chance the case could be put back on the court’s roll.
