SOUTH African schools with pupils who excel in mathematics are being encouraged to register their pupils in this year’s national Maths Challenge, which will take place from September 20 to 22.

This event accommodates pupils from grades 0 to 12. Schools must register before Friday.

Pupils and teachers can go to to register.

There is a free practice session prior to the start of the challenge, between today and Monday.

The challenge is run in conjunction with 3P Learning, the founders of World Maths Day, and encourages pupils from all over the country to participate in breaking the South African record for the largest online maths competition in the country.

Says Rob Masefield, South African general manager for 3P Learning, “The competition is very popular as it encourages students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to have a go at maths in a fun, interactive and accessible way. Best of all, participation in the competition is free — all students need is Internet access.”

The 2009 South African competition attracted 50 000 entries.

Last year the best schools came from East London, Cape Town and Pretoria.

“South African ambassadors for World Maths Day 2011 will be chosen from participants in this years’ Maths Challenge,” says Masefield.
