Call for standard uniforms

AHEAD of the new school year, parents of new schoolgoers fork out over R1 000 for uniforms for their children.

On our Facebook page, we asked parents how much they parted with before the journey began.

“Grade R is costing me about R1 000 and I still need to spend R200 and R640 for school fees and plus-

minus R400 for after care,”said parent Jenney Willett.

“R1 000 for uniforms, plus R1 000 for stationery,” said Nokuthula Mpanza, while Angela Webster said she’d spent R2 000 for uniforms and R400 for stationery.

National Association of School Governing body chairperson Reginald Chiliza said that for parents there was nothing as beautiful as a child dressed in a school uniform.

Times were tough and most parents were unemployed, Chiliza said, but that was no excuse to not make sacrifices. “Parents should always start saving from January for school to buy uniforms,” Chiliza said.

“Any parent who loves their child wants to see them in their school uniform,” he added.

Retailer Pep said it sold 57% of all schoolwear in the country.

“The most common schoolwear items in South Africa are grey trousers and white shirts. Pep believes these should be adopted as the standard school uniform,” spokesperson Lana Martens said.

She said that Pep produced about 9 500 grey trousers and shorts and between 14 000 and 21 000 shirts every day.

The Witness contacted three retail companies that sell uniforms. The table below shows what each item of clothing cost.
