Calls for Judge Hlophe’s suspension

2008-06-02 00:00

Cape Town — The Cape Bar Council (CBC) is to call on the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) to suspend Cape Judge President John Hlophe.

The council met yesterday to discuss allegations brought by Constitutional Court judges against Hlophe.

CBC chairman Rudi Van Rooyen described the allegations as “shocking”, saying the council tried to meet with Hlophe yesterday, but were not able to contact him.

He said Hlophe should be suspended to retain public confidence, while the serious allegations against him are investigated.

On Friday, Constitutional Court judges accused Hlophe of trying to influence the court’s decision over raids by the Scorpions on properties of Jacob Zuma and French arms manufacturing giant Thint.

ANC national spokeswoman Jessie Duarte said yesterday Zuma does not have an inappropriate relationship with Hlophe.
