Calls of sympathy flood in for baby Tayla

2010-06-30 00:00

HEATHER Geddes, the mother of three-month-old baby Tayla who was born with serious heart complications, said she was utterly overwhelmed by the phone calls and best wishes she received after their story was published in yesterday’s Witness.

“The number of people who have called and told me their personal stories dealing with things like this has been so amazing,” she said.

“I even had one mom call me and pray with me over the phone. I was so touched and utterly amazed,” she said.

Geddes’s baby daughter needs open-heart surgery to rectify her heart’s three holes and missing septum.

Tayla is fed through a nasal-gastric tube and is constantly receiving oxygen.

Doctors will only be able to operate when Tayla has reached three- and-a-half kilograms.

Since the article was published, the tiny girl has experienced a setback and lost 200 grams; she now weighs only three kilograms.

“She has lost 200 grams in the last 48 hours, but we are hopeful she’ll regain the weight soon,” said a positive Geddes.

The large number of calls Geddes received yesterday prompted her to open a separate bank account for donations for Tayla’s highly specialised and expensive surgery.

“One gentleman called and asked me for banking details. I asked for his name and he refused to tell me who he was. All he said was he wanted to help Tayla,” she said.

“I can’t thank people enough. I have been given real hope,” Geddes said.
