Campus stabbing case postponed again

2014-04-04 00:00

THE trial of 19-year-old Claudius Chetty, who is charged for the murder of FET College student Rashmika Janthielayal (17), has again been postponed.

Chetty’s private attorney Anand Pillay withdrew from the case yesterday, and Chetty has now elected to opt for a legal aid lawyer to represent him.

The case was postponed in the Pietermaritzburg regional court until April 8.

It is expected that a trial date may be set down on that day.

Chetty is charged with stabbing Janthielayal 14 times at the college’s Northdale campus on June 3 last year.

He is in custody pending trial after regional court magistrate Bhekizitha Phoswa ruled last October that it was not in the interests of justice that he be released on bail.

At his bail hearing Chetty indicated he intended to plead not guilty to the murder charge.
