Campus talk: psychiatric disorders

2012-05-21 00:00

CONSULTANT psychiatrist Mike Ewart-Smith will give a lecture titled Sad, Mad, Bad: The Boundaries of Normality in 2012 as part of the Royal Society of South Africa lecture series tomorrow.

Starting at 5.45 pm, for 6 pm, it will be at UKZN’s John Bews Main Lecture Theatre, Life Sciences Campus, Carbis Road.

Ewart-Smith will discuss the reasons for the increase in recent years in the number of people diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, particularly with regard to mood and anxiety disorders and psychiatric disorders in children.

He will also examine legislation governing involuntary treatment of certain patients and look at situations where psychiatrists are asked to assist courts and other bodies to determine if offenders’ responsibility for their actions may have been affected by mental illness.

Ewart-Smith was principal psychiatrist at Sterkfontein Hospital and is an associate editor of the African Journal of Psychiatry and an honorary clinical consultant in the division of psychiatry at the University of the Witwatersrand.
