Candidates race turns ugly

ANC nominations for the upcoming local government elections have been marred by allegations of assault, intimidation and death threats among party members in the Edendale area.

This emerged after a former bodyguard of Msunduzi Municipality’s sacked Mayor, Zanele Hlatshwayo, opened a case against Ward 10 councillor Musawenkosi “Qashana” Mchunu on Monday.

A magistrate then issued Mchunu with a peace order, warning him to stop threatening the bodyguard, Thandubuhle Mlaba (32), or risk being arrested.

Mlaba, who now claims to fear for his safety, said he went to Plessislaer police station after Mchunu had made several threats against him.

“Yesterday he was travelling with his wife when they met me on the street.

“He told me that he was going deal with me for dragging his name through the mud.

“On October 3 he phoned me to accuse me of writing a letter of complaint against him to the ANC office. He also made the threats to deal with me again,” said Mlaba.

The Witness has a copy of the peace order against Mchunu, who has signed it. It warns Mchunu against intimidating and threatening to kill. It also orders him to stay away from Mlaba and his home in Azalea.

“I have reported all these threats to the ANC regional secretary, Super Zuma, who also encouraged me to report them to the police,” he said.

Mchunu said he was simply trying to stop Mlaba’s lies about him.

“I did not threaten that man … I just told to stop spreading lies about me, because people always tell me what he says about me,” said Mchunu.

Meanwhile the bodyguard of Msunduzi Municipality deputy mayor Jabu Ngubo has been accused of striking an ANC member with the butt of his official firearm during a nomination meeting in Dambuza last week Thursday.

Police confirmed that a case of assault has been opened against Ngubo’s bodyguard, although he has not been arrested.

The assault allegedly happened when Ngubo was deployed to Dambuza to oversee the nomination process.

The alleged victim is employed an prison warder. When contacted on Friday, Ngubo claimed not to know about the incident.

Ward 21 councillor Mtuza Bhekithemba Mkhize defended the bodyguard.

“That prison warder is a liar. He was not assaulted. He is the kind of person who always looks for trouble in the ANC. His application for membership was declined because of his bad record.
