Canoeing: Back to the good ol’ days

2007-12-26 00:00

Rodney Day (back), Bruce Acutt and Anton Venter get comfortable in their canvas canoes, which they will use to travel down the Msunduzi River as part of the fifth annual Canvas Canoe Race.

Venter said that the event, which starts today, takes Dusi veterans back to the days where canvas canoes were used instead of today’s high-tech boats, and also raises awareness for the conservation of the Dusi and Umgeni rivers.

The race is linking up with the Dusi-Umgeni Conservation Trust (Duct) and the paddlers will scan the river for alien plants, debris and illegal sandmining plaguing the area.

The 10 paddlers taking part have nearly 200 Dusi canoe marathons between them.
