Canoeing: Epworth and Michaelhouse tops at Slalom

BEN Bradford of Michaelhouse won the boys’ section of the Capitol Caterers/Popes Canoe Centre Interschools Flat-water Slalom regatta on Saturday.

Racing on an 11-gate course at the varsity pool in Pietermaritzburg, Bradford had the better of second-placed U16 Donovan Wewege from Maritzburg College in both runs. Lance Kime from St Charles College was third. James Wewege from Maritzburg College won the U14 category in an excellent 11th place overall.

As expected, Katie Rennie from St John’s DSG dominated in the girls’ competition, winning from Epworth’s U16 winner Brittany Petersen. Epworth took the next four places as well with Tamika Haw in third place. Bianca Haw, also from Epworth, took the U14 age group in 10th place overall.

Sixty-two paddlers from nine different schools took part in the event with Epworth winning the girls’ school category overall and Michaelhouse tops among the boys’ schools.

The next event in the 2009 Interschools Challenge is the Shongweni Flat-water Marathon on October 10.

Boys U14: 1. James Wewege MAR 171,81; 2. Patrick Dillon CLI 218,31; 3. Brent Schroeder MAR 244,07.

Girls U14: 1. Bianca Haw EPW 243,42; 2. Jordan Peek EPW 267,85; 3. Courtney MacKenzie TWC 302,23.
