Canoeing: Midmar mini-marathon

2009-11-06 00:00

THERE is just one canoe race this weekend, the Hi-Q Midmar Mini-Marathon at Midmar Dam on Sunday.

With Dusi preparation firmly in mind, the main race will begin at 9 am from Orient Park and covers a 23 km course that includes a total of seven kilometres of Dusi-style portaging.

There will be a Guppy race at 9.30 am and the organisers, Fezela Canoe Club, are hoping for a repeat of the excellent Guppy entries at both the Ozzie Gladwin and Ngwenya races over the last two weeks.

There is also the first-ever “World K3 Championships” for those who don’t like running. The K3s will cover a 25 km paddling course, the same as the main race but skipping, or almost skipping, the portages.

Instead of proper portages, one member of each K3 will be required to jump out at the portage starts, run as fast as possible around a token 100 metre loop and then carry on with the paddle.

There will be a gate entry of R25 at Orient Park that will also entitle seconds to enter at the main entrance of Midmar to follow their paddlers on the big portage from Hobi Point to the Cascades.

There will be full catering available at the start/finish venue, and the race is perfect for a family day at the dam.
