Canoeist still in ICU, no change in condition

2012-05-08 00:00

THERE has been no change in the condition of Underberg farmer and leading canoeist Graeme Anderson, his close friend, Dr Grant Lindsay, said yesterday.

Anderson is still in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Pietermaritzburg’s Medi-Clinic, fighting what is thought to be rabies after taking in a stray dog.

Lindsay said Anderson would have a “very extended” stay in the unit.

“Intensive care unit specialists are continuing tests and monitoring him,” he said.

Lindsay said Anderson was holidaying in Mozambique during the recent long weekend — along with girlfriend Karen Crouch, and friend Guy Taylor and his wife — when he became ill and returned home.

His condition worsened and he was admitted to hospital last Wednesday.

Although there had not been a definite diagnosis and tests were ongoing, Lindsay said, there was a “high possibility” Anderson had rabies.

Lindsay said Anderson’s family “is shattered” by his condition and continued to visit and spend time with him in hospital daily.

Anderson is also being supported by the Underberg community.

He is well known in agriculture and as a “daredevil” extreme sportsman in canoeing circles.
