Canoeists prepare in safer waters

2008-01-14 00:00

Two canoeists take advantage of the cool early morning air to get some practice in ahead of the Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon, which is set to start in Pietermaritzburg this Thursday.

After scares about the quality of the water in Camps Drift, which led organisers to plan an alternative start, the latest readings show improved water quality with a low health risk for canoeing after the recent hot weather.

Dusi joint task team spokesman, Ian Bailey, told The Witness: ‘The acceptable moderately low health risk at the low level bridge above the Darvill Waste Water Works is maintained and then improves again to good below the Waste Water Works.’

He said the Msunduzi Municipality and Umgeni Water staff will continue to patrol the river banks and sewer lines for any discharges.
