Cansa: month of the moustache

2010-11-02 00:00

MEN on the South Coast will dedicate their upper lips to a month of moustache growth with “Movember”.

The charity initiative, which began yesterday, aims to change the way men approach issues concerning their health.

2010 kicks off the second year of “moustachery” to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) Men’s Health campaign.

Movember involves ‘Mo Bros’ — with help from their female supporters known as ‘Mo Sistas’ — growing a ‘Mo’ (Australian slang for a moustache) throughout the month of November.

The event will specifically seek to raise money for prostate and testicular cancer.

Last year more than 1 500 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas took part across the country, raising over R240 000.

Sue Janse van Rensburg, Cansa’s CEO is optimistic that the drive will be successful.

“This year we are hoping that Movember will be even bigger and we are urging all men out there to join Cansa and help improve the lives of male cancer survivors,” she said. “Behind the fun, there is also a serious message — the lifetime risk for men developing prostate cancer in South Africa is one in 23.

Cansa’s South Coast regional manager, James Jones, has urged South Coasters to support the initiative.

Participants will start Movember with a clean-shaven face and gain sponsorship for their Mo throughout the month.
