Capacity turnout expected for ‘best-ever Durban Airshow’

PLANES, parachutes and jets will keep crowds spellbound on Saturday, July 17, when the 54th edition of the Durban Airshow takes place, and organisers are confident that this event will be a sell-out.

The air show will be held at Virginia Airport in Durban North and spokesperson Ray de Vries said everything is on track.

“The show is coming together very nicely indeed and is taking a huge step up with the sponsorship of the City of Durban,” said De Vries.

“Tickets are selling out fast — it is a one-day show with a very exciting after-party starting at 5.30 pm in a marquee in the Virginia Airport car park.”

De Vries said the family event, followed by the Hansa Durban Airshow after-party, will be “action-packed” with “live music going on into the night”.

“We expect a capacity crowd of over 15 000 people at the aerodrome to watch what will be the best ever airshow yet. There are over 45 acts with a plane taking off or landing every seven minutes,” he said.

Among the list of attractions are parachutists, civilian jets, the Silver Falcons, passenger airliners, skydivers and acts involving aircraft that will take place on the ground.

“We have a very exciting pyrotechnics act that has not been seen for a long time, as well as aerobatic team formations, 737 passenger jets in low flyovers, a plane landing on a truck, and many other favourites that are guaranteed to keep the crowds enthralled” said De Vries.

The show will open with a parade and a tribute to the city’s emergency, safety and security services assisted by major emergency roleplayers.

Gates open at 7 am to the public and the show commences at 8:30 am. Ticket prices are R90 for adults and R40 for children, seniors and paraplegics. Tickets for the Hansa Durban Airshow afterparty are R80.
