Cape Cobras choose a draw

2009-11-23 00:00

THE Cape Cobras, for reasons that still befuddle this correspondent, chose to trudge to a pointless draw at Kingsmead yesterday instead of making a game of it against the Dolphins.

Twice, Dolphins coach Graham Ford approached the visitors to “arrange” a situation which could add some sort of life to what had been the most pointless of weekends.

After last week’s rains had seen two days lost, the weekend’s infinitely better weather brought hope of an exciting final day. Instead, Shukri Conrad’s team was content to bat through most of yesterday without any positive intent.

Andrew Puttick crawled to a five-hour century, and Stiann van Zyl at least brought some fluency with a 94-ball 75.

But, by that stage, Imraan Khan had already run through his entire list of options for bowling — including some choice pies served by seriously part-time duo of Messrs Miller and Bosman.

But nothing could rouse the Cobras to show any intent, and one can only wonder what demons convinced them not to accept the Dolphins’ offer. By all accounts, the Cobras had the best of conditions, with bright skies and a feather-bed of a pitch to deal with.

Had they gone along with a plan to forego an innings apiece, they may well have scooped the extra points on offer and at least made it worthwhile for those who were unfortunate enough to witness their long walk to boredom.

Saturday had seen the Dolphins bat, and they were frustrated by some disciplined bowling from man of the match Vernon Philander in particular.

The seamer was the only bowler willing to go for his wickets, and his return of 4/45 was just reward.

The Cobras, by virtue of bowling out the Dolphins for 237, won the bonus points. But no one cared.

All that will be remembered by those at Kingsmead yesterday are the number of clouds that floated over the stadium while the Cobras auditioned for “Watching Paint Dry”, the tragedy.
