Capital radio to upgrade, get on air

2014-01-28 00:00

KZN Capital 104 FM recently moved into new premises in Langalibalele Street, Pietermaritzburg, and now, thanks to a R1,5 million injection of capital from the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), the station will be able to upgrade the existing sound equipment in its studios and get on air.

Speaking to The Witness, Jerry Jones, founder and chief executive officer of KZN Capital FM, said that in addition to the studio upgrade, money would be used for a transmitter and to pay for the station’s operational costs. Once the hardware is in place, Jones aims to begin test broadcasting on March 1 and for the station to go live from April.

A co-founder of the city’s first community radio station, Radio Maritzburg, Jones said KZN Capital 104 FM aimed to attract a wide range of listeners in Pietermaritzburg by tackling issues around health, education, sport, entertainment, current affairs, culture and religion.

He also wants the station to speak for those who don’t have a voice.

“When you look at the community, about 60% of people are not educated properly. They need to have a way to communicate,” Jones said.

Nkopane Maphiri, programme director for the MDDA (a government agency set up to provide financial and non-financial aid to small commercial and community media), said the grant would strengthen KZN Capital 104 FM and help it achieve its licensing mandate.

He said that it was the aim of the agency to encourage a diversity of voices in both broadcast and print media as a way of strengthening South Africa’s democracy.
