Car chase: Burglary suspects killed

2012-04-23 00:00

AN accident during a police chase claimed the lives of three burglary suspects in Umbilo on Friday afternoon, police said.

Another two suspects were in a serious condition and were taken to hospital under police guard, said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker.

Naicker said a member of the Glenmore Community Watch was on patrol when he saw a car with two suspicious-looking occupants and called the community watch for back-up while keeping observation.

When the back-up arrived they saw other suspects, carrying a laptop computer, jump over a wall from a house in the area and get into a car.

A chase ensued and the driver of the suspects’ car lost control and collided with a bakkie while trying to outrun the pursuers.

Two of the suspects died on the scene, and a third died in hospital on Saturday morning.

The chairperson for the Glenmore Community Watch, Wally Coombes, told The Witness that he was not sure if the driver of the vehicle was one of the suspects who had died.

“There was so much chaos afterwards that we were not able to determine who was who,” he said.

The two occupants of the other vehicle sustained “light” injuries and were taken to hospital.

“We are convinced that this group of thugs will be linked by detectives to other house breakings and robberies in the area,” said Naicker.
