Car fanatic wins trip to F1 race

RAKESH Singh from Mount Edgecombe could hardly contain his excitement after being named as the lucky winner of an all-expenses paid trip to the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur next year.

Singh (36), a prosecutor at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court, entered the Ballito Street Heroes Sound Off competition.

He was entered into the draw after participating in the competition at the September 14 event.

“It is an awesome feeling and it was the first time I ever won anything. I used to watch a lot of Formula One when Michael Schumacher was driving, but have not watched for a while,” he said.

Singh added that the prize would get him back into watching Formula One and that he had a lot of catching up to do before jetting off to Malaysia.

The car enthusiast said for him it was never about competing and he only participated in racing events on weekends for his personal enjoyment.

Singh, who has a four-year-old daughter, said his profession allowed him to make a difference by representing the victims of crime. “I would rather represent victims of crime than offenders”, he said.

Singh’s prize in March includes flights, airport taxes, accommodation for three nights at a four-star hotel, as well as all airport and event transfers for the race weekend.

Edusport’s consultant Ed Hill said they donated the Malaysian Grand Prix package as an inaugural event prize to encourage people to participate in Ballito Street Heroes. “It clearly worked, with the event being supported by a wide range of car enthusiast entries,” said Hill.
