Car in the Park: New award for the best car club display

2011-05-12 00:00

MORE than 10 000 visitors are expected to stream through the gates for this Sunday’s Weekend Witness Cars In the Park. Now into its 35th year, it’s the longest-running, annual display of vintage, veteran and classic vehicles in South Africa. This year more than 500 vehicles are expected to make an appearance.

For the first time the Weekend Witness will also present an award to the best display by a car club. The award is expected to become an annual feature of the show and will undoubtedly “raise the bar” on the standard of exhibits.

One of the special cars on display will be a 1928 Dodge owned by David Hoepfl of Hilton.

Hundreds of owners will have trekked from far and wide to show their lovingly restored old vehicles and the organisers, the Vintage and Sports Car Club of Pietermaritzburg, is confident of a good turnout from the public.

The theme of the event will be: “Restoration — Work in Progress”, and visitors will be able to see a number of examples of unrestored and partly-restored vehicles.

They will also be able to speak to the owners, to get a better understanding of the patience and commitment that goes into getting a vehicle to look as good as it did, the day it was driven off the showroom floor, 40, 50 or more years ago.

With a flea market, live music, including an appearance by the Caledonian Pipe Band, food stalls and a beer tent, the event promises to be a great outing for the whole family.

Admission is R40 for adults and R20 for students and pensioners. Although Park Avenue will be closed, ample free parking is available around the exhibition area.
