Car kebab: Six injured in Cato Manor skewering

2010-01-11 00:00

SIX people were injured, three critically, when a street pole skewered their car after it left the road and hit a fence in the Cato Manor area of Durban at the weekend.

The six-metre-long wooden pole, similar to those used for telephone poles, was wedged in the car from front to back, said Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911.

In addition to the injuries to the occupants, a pedestrian walking by was hit by the spinning vehicle and was seriously injured.

“It is thought that the pole caused the critical injuries to three of the occupants, all of whom are fighting for their lives in area hospitals.

All three sustained enormous head trauma from the very large pole, and associated fractures, lacerations and abrasions,” said Wicks.

The other three people in the car were lucky to escape relatively unscathed with only bumps and bruises.
