Car shortage worries DA

2014-01-28 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL DA leader Sizwe Mchunu said yesterday the fact that Pietermaritzburg’s flying squad had only five functional vehicles was worrying.

He planned to pose questions about the matter at the next sitting of the community safety portfolio committee. He said he expects MEC Willies Mchunu to “give a detailed report-back on exactly what is being done to remedy this situation as a matter of urgency”.

Mchunu was responding to yesterday’s report in The Witness detailing the findings of a Pietermaritzburg crime victim, Shameela Jasat.

Mchunu said there was “no way” that only five vehicles could properly service 45 police stations and a population of 600 000 people. Mchunu said there was no doubt criminal activities in the city will “spiral out of control” as the shortage led felons to believe that they could operate with impunity.
