Car theft:ex-Bafana player cleared

2011-05-24 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — A charge of vehicle theft against a former Bafana Bafana midfielder whom police arrested in a stolen vehicle after a high-speed chase, was dropped yesterday.

Jabu “Pule” Mahlangu (30), who has played for Kaizer Chiefs and the 2010 Bafana Bafana squad, among others, was one of four men arrested in the stolen vehicle in Johannesburg on Friday night.

Shortly after the arrest police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou announced that a vehicle-tracking company, Netstar, had picked up the signal of a white Volkswagen Jetta 5 in Benoni.

The Jetta had been reported stolen during a house robbery in Springs in April.

Ndou said members of Netstar pursued the stolen vehicle on the N12, but lost track of it during the chase. Members of the flying squad later spotted the car on the M1 and forced the driver to stop, after which the four passengers were arrested.

Only the driver, Mxolisi Nkosi (34), appeared yesterday on a charge of vehicle theft in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Ndou confirmed that charges were dropped against the other three passengers, including Mahlangu and the actor and kwaito musician, Oscar Mgudlwa, who is better known for his role as the midget, Madluphuthu.

He could not say why the charges were withdrawn.

A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority could not be reached at the time of going to print. Nkosi received bail of R5 000 and will appear in court again next week.
