Car thief: Tries desperately to evade cops

2008-10-15 00:00

A man alleged to have been involved in the theft of a BMW in Ladysmith this week went to great lengths to avoid being arrested.

Police spokeswoman Charmaine Struwig said that on Monday night, a BMW was stolen from a resident of Coleus Drive, Ladysmith.

On Tuesday, Ladysmith police found the stolen vehicle, which had been left by the suspect with another person, in Harrismith.

Police then spotted the suspect driving around Harrismith in another vehicle, but when the suspect saw them, he sped away towards Ladysmith, Struwig said.

The suspect, in an attempt to evade police, then changed his route and started heading towards Bergville. But his luck ran out when he crashed the car. He abandoned it and made his way into Bergville, where he phoned a friend to fetch him. He was arrested after he was found hiding in the friend’s car.
