Career help for bright sparks

2014-08-18 00:00

A WOMEN in business-led outreach programme attracted over 500 matriculants to a glitzy affair at an Umhlanga hotel over the weekend.

Run by the Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) Durban, the top three girls from schools throughout the province were invited to a once-off career guidance programme.

BWA Durban chairperson Farzanah Mall said the event called “Winning in the Workplace” was to inspire the girls for a variety of career choices.

“Many come from homes where career choices are not discussed. Here we are able to provide sound advice and the girls are allowed to engage directly with people in the various industries,” said Mall.

The event was hosted at the Coastlands Hotel on Saturday and is in its 12th year. Each girl received a goodie bag valued at R1 000, while prizes, including laptops, cellphones and bursaries, were on offer.

“We have started a legacy programme and will track the girls from this point on. We have also urged them to be the catalysts in their home areas and to spread what they were taught,” said Mall.
