Cars in the Park

2012-05-16 00:00

A WOODEN 1964 Ford F100 model car excites its owner, Danie Grissel, so much it makes him feel like “a young schoolboy going on his first date”.

He told The Witness he had fallen in love with the vehicle, which will be one of several vintage and veteran cars that will be on show in Alexandra Park on Sunday.

The 36th annual Cars in The Park is the oldest show of its kind in South Africa and some 1 200 vehicles are expected to be on display.

Grissel, who helped to build the wooden pick-up, said he bought it for R30 000 after the original owner died.

“The owner was a friend of my grandfather’s. He did most of the work on the car and I just did the finishing touches.

“It took me about seven months to put everything together.”

Alongside Grissel’s wooden vehicle will be many other interesting cars including Porsches and Ferraris. More than 12 000 people are expected to attend.

Live music, food and drinks will be the order of the day at this fun outing for the whole family.

Admission is R40 per person for adults and R20 for scholars. Drivers of exhibition vehicles and one passenger get in free.
