THE Maritzburg schools’ soccer teams took part in an interdistricts tournament a few weeks back and following this the KZN High Schools’ Football Association teams in the four age groups were selected. It sees a changing of the guard, as Carter High School led the selections with a total of 11 players chosen.

Carter are also the only school to have players selected in all age groups. At the U19 level, Maritzburg College with five and Carter and Empangeni with four each dominated the selections.

Michaelhouse, with three players, have the most at U16, while in the U15 age group three schools, Crawford LL, Westville and DHS, each have three players. In the U14 team, DHS have five players selected followed by Carter with three.

Four schools — College, DHS, Hilton and Pinetown — have players selected in three age group sides. College and DHS each have nine players selected. There are no College players in the U15 team while DHS have no players at U19 level. There are seven Pinetown players selected with none in the U14 team. Hilton have six players with none in the U19 team.

The teams have had two practice sessions together with their coaches over the last two Sundays. There will be two further sessions before the teams leave on Friday, September 20 for a tournament in Gauteng. They return on Monday, September 23.

The KZN High Schools’ FA was formed to give some structure and published fixtures to football matches between the schools that belong to it.

Selecting a KZN team gives recognition to the better players who play in friendly matches during the third term.
